Pass A Hair Drug Test

How & Why Hair Drug Testing Is Used

Hair analysis has long been considered a reliable forensic technique. It can be used to identify toxic environmental exposure, such as exposure to mold or heavy metals. It is also a trusted source of forensic evidence.

Scientists can match a hair sample found at a crime scene to a victim or perpetrator based on unique genetic markers as well as with the presence of different metabolites within the hair shaft.

Moreover, it has become one of the standard tests applied to subjects to determine whether they have been consuming illicit or recreational drugs.

Though there are many ways to test someone for drug use like saliva drug testing, urine drug testing, and sweat drug testing, hair drug testing is one of the preferred methods for drug screening.

Hair tests can be used to test for drugs by probation officers, employers, athletic integrity officers or even an ex-spouse in a custody battle.

Hair drug tests are also often administered by child protection agencies to determine whether or not a parent is fit to care for their children. A hair drug test is performed by collecting a hair sample from the subject in question.

A standard hair sample varies, with a technician usually collecting between 100-200 strands per test. Contrary to popular belief, the hair is cut, not plucked. The test does not require the root of the hair.

The technician cuts the hair as close to the scalp as possible so that the test can detect more recent drug use. They may collect from many different areas of the scalp to ensure the subject of the test is not left with an obvious bald spot.

This method of testing is a favorite for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the test is relatively non-invasive. It is neither inconvenient nor painful for the subject. All that is required is a 1.5-inch long sample of hair strands.

This is far less intrusive than drawing blood or supervising someone while they urinate into a test container. Secondly, it is much harder to cheat or attempt to cheat a hair test.

While people may try to add chemicals to a urine sample to try to skew their results, it is essentially impossible to add anything to the test to alter the results. Additionally, a lab technician usually takes the sample, making switching out samples a non-option.

Hair is also easy to store for long periods of time without worry of the sample being spoiled. A hair drug test is also a more sensitive form of drug testing. According to studies up to “ 85% of the drug users identified by a Psychemedics test could get through a urine screen and enter the workforce.”

The FDA sets minimum standards for hair follicle testing procedures and results from a hair test are admissible in court proceedings. A hair drug test is most effective at least 7 days after the drug use has taken place.

The hair containing metabolite traces needs time to grow above the scalp so that it may be collected and used in a hair drug test. Hair being used for a hair drug test is subject to strict chain-of-custody regulations.

This means that hair cannot be collected from a hairbrush and brought in for analysis, as the time frame and ownership of the hair will not be certain, it must be collected by or in the presence of a lab technician.

Finally, the reason that this test is so useful in drug testing is that the results go back much further than they would with any other drug testing method.

With a urine drug test, traces of drug use can disappear within a few days. With saliva, blood, and perspiration testing, the test essentially needs to be performed while the subject is still intoxicated to produce results.

With a hair test, lab technicians can find traces of drug use dating back 90 days (or 3 months) for head hair and perhaps even longer for body hair. While the hair on your head is constantly falling out or shedding itself, the hair on your body usually only sheds about once a year, so body hair has the potential of detecting even less recent drug use.

From the testers perspective, this takes away the option of simply abstaining from drug use for a couple of days and producing a negative drug test.

Hair tests are more accurate in identifying the chronic use of certain drugs. However, they can also detect trace amounts with a one-time user. Although less common than a urine test, hair drug testing is some of the most accurate forms of drug testing that exists.

A hair drug test can yield results within 24 hours. However, if it tests positive, the re-testing for confirmation process will usually take about 5 days.

The lab technician will test for traces of drug metabolites in the hair follicle. In theory, any part of the strand can be tested, but that should only be implemented by law enforcement officers.

If you are performing a drug test for an employer, you can insist that they cut the hair at 1.5 inches, as this is the standard operating procedure. The sample can be performed on hair from the subject’s head or their body.

If the subject shaves his or her entire body, then it is not possible to retrieve a proper sample.

One thing to note about this is that many companies will consider showing up to a drug test shaved head to toe an automatic fail, so this is not a good solution when trying to find a way to pass a drug test.

It is also not possible to collect a hair sample from a hairpiece or hair extensions, even if they are worn for long periods of time. This is because the hair from these accessories will not have any traces of drugs inside them and any external contaminants would be washed off the hair during cleaning.

After collection, the hair sample then goes through a chemical cleansing process. This removes any external traces of substance on your hair, making it impossible for you to claim you were simply exposed to second-hand marijuana or crack smoke if you indeed consumed drugs.

After the hair is cleansed, the wash is analyzed for contaminants, allowing the lab to cross check the contents of the wash against the results of the hair test. This all but eliminates the risk of a false positive on a hair drug test.

When you ingest substances, the metabolites actually grow into your hair follicle. The cleansing process also strips the hairs of chemicals such as dye or bleach to ensure an accurate sampling. A hair test is normally used to test for:

  • Morphine, Codeine, Heroin
  • Cocaine
  • Amphetamines
  • Marijuana
  • Phencyclidine
  • MDMA

However, a hair drug test can also detect other substances such as anti-anxiety medications, sleep-inducing medicines, and drugs that are used to help people rid themselves of other habits such as methadone. A hair drug test can even detect alcohol and nicotine in the hair follicle! It all depends on how many panels your employer or whoever is responsible for you being required to take the test ordered.

While urinalysis has always been the most common way of testing for drug use, the hair drug testing method is now hot on its heels. Urine tests are easier to cheat, there are manufacturers of both synthetic and freeze-dried human urine and the body clears trace amounts of drugs in urine within days of use.

With a hair drugs test, there are none of the privacy issues that make urine drug tests so unreliable and the trace amounts of drug metabolites in hair are available for much longer.

Hair drug testing has been undergoing dramatic changes. Testing labs now have the ability to detect even traces of drug metabolites. That means that a one-time use, one slip up, one mistake, can cost you dearly.

Although in theory, a hair drug test does have the capacity to tell how long ago the drug use occurred and whether the subject was using chronically, most employers will not take this information into account. You will simply fail the drug test and suffer the consequences.

Downsides of this testing method are few but include cost and recent drug use. As mentioned, a hair drug test cannot detect metabolites from drugs consumed in the previous week or so, as the affected part of the hair will not yet be above the skin and could not be collected as part of a hair sample.

The laboratory tests associated with hair drug testing are more expensive than urine testing or testing a saliva swab. Another criticism of hair follicle drug testing is that metabolites can have a hard time binding to hair with less melanin in it. So there may be no metabolites present in very light blonde hair and a test may produce a negative result, despite the subject having consumed drugs.

To ensure a pass on a drug test, we would recommend using a hair drug test detox shampoo from our collection paired with one of our full body cleanses. Not only will you ensure a cleanse from the inside out, but you will also have the peace of mind of being certain of passing a backup test if they should require on.

It is designed to cleanse hair of THC, Benzo and opiate metabolite traces. This shampoo is designed for a person that uses drugs fewer than twice a week.

If you use drugs more than twice a week or have consumed cocaine or meth, we recommend purchasing our precision wash shampoo instead. This cleanse is permanent; however, it only treats existing hair and will not be effective for new growth after the wash has taken place.

Precision Cleanse Shampoo: Our Precision Cleanse Hair Detoxification system comes in a 1 or 2 bottle format for the hair on your head and body hair. This shampoo is designed to reduce toxins from the hair follicle of a drug user who consumes or has previously consumed drugs more than 3 times a week.

It's goal is to break the bond of metabolites from THC, Benzo, opiates, cocaine, or meth from the keratin of the hair and then remove them from the hair strand. This shampoo offers permanent results; however, will only treat existing hair and will not be effective for new growth after the wash has taken place.

You may be surprised to find that we do in fact believe there is a place for drug testing in the workplace. Anyone who is responsible for the safety of others should be sound of mind and sober. Drug testing can also help reduce business costs associated with absenteeism, accidents, and training and recruitment.

As always, the easiest way to pass a drug test is to abstain from drug consumption. However, random and excessive drug tests can be an invasion of your privacy. Often, employers use the information they collect during a drug test selectively. For example, they will accept the fact that there is THC in a hair strand, but do not take into account that it was perhaps one use, three months ago when you may not have even been employed with the company.

Although hair drug tests are extremely accurate, there is also room for error with any testing method. This article reports that in 2015, all results from a labs hair-testing department were deemed inadmissible after it produced several false positives. As a result, many parents had their children removed from their homes and put into foster care due to their perceived drug abuse. Mistakes like these can have lasting and serious impacts on people’s lives.
